Simulation of Garment Production Line for Higher Productivity

Abstract

Clothing industry is trying to adjust itself to the market trend to shorter fashion cycle and more variable styles. They have to achieve more flexible and efficient production capability. One of the possible changes they can make is reengineering their production line. Considering the cost and time required to plan a new production line, and uncertainty of the effect of these changes, simulation of the product line to test various alternatives appears to be more effective. We case studied a factory which manufactures men's tailored jacket, and developed a simulation model using AIM. We verified the model with real production data. From the initial model we developed three alternative models. We didn't want to make suggestions which require too much of changes. The first alternative model has been developed for more balanced work among the workers without reduction of workers. The second alternative model has been developed for more balanced work with reduction of workers. The last alternative model introduced a team of QR production system as a part of the factory. All these alternative simulation models improved its productivity and throughput time and labour utilization.
