Abstract

Two types of EMI shielding techniques-conductive coating with binder and non-electrolytic plating-were compared. The results showed that non-electrolytic plating was the more effective technique in terms of EMI SE and fabric property. Non-electrolytic plating technique contained multi-step processes; surface conditioning, etching, neutralization, acceleration, plating, and washing. Among them, the surface activation conditions were varied and the effects of etching conditions and catalyst accelerators were studied. Overall, the results indicated that acid etching resulted in higher SE values in the broad frequency range than alkali etching. For a catalyst activator, SnCl$_2$ㆍ2$H_2O$ provided even SE over the wide frequency range but stained the treated fabric. On the other hand, KCl showed better SE than SnCl$_2$ㆍ2$H_2O$ in the frequency range of less than 200 MHz without staining.
