Abstract
This paper discussed the assessment of hand of polyester fabrics changed by alkaline hydrolysis. The sementic differential scale was established using the data-base collected from nonexperts and experts in apparel industry. Analyzing the subjective rating by common factor analysis with oblimin rotation, five factors expressing the hand were induced. Factor one was the weight which was related to the thickness. Factor two was the surface property related to the surface roughness or softness. The moisture related properties and the thermal character were the third and forth factors respectively. The drapability was the last factor. The evaluations on the weight, surface property, drapability were similar by both groups. However, the moisture related property and the thermal character were evaluated differently. Weight was the most important factor and surface property was the second factor judging the hand of fabrics. Consequently weight and surface changes by alkaline hydrolysis were perceived obviously by consumers. Therefore if the level of alkaline hydrolysis was controlled properly, the preference of the hydrolyzed polyester fabrics by consumers will be increased.
