To produce the cellulosic fibers which have antimicrobial properties, cellulose-chitin blends were prepared using DMAc/LiCl as a co-solvent for the two polysaccharides. Cellulose-chitin blend fibers were spun by wet spinning method. Analyses of the X-ray diffractograms, the film properties, and the tensile property of the fibers suggest that cellulose and chitin have compatibility. With the increase of chitin content in the fibers, tenacity remained almost unchanged, but the antimicrobial properties were improved. The antimicrobial property was highly improved by deacetylation of the spun blend fibers.
