Abstract

Kawabata Evaluation System (KES) instruments were used to make objective measurements of the mechanical properties of fabrics including: softness measured with the KES compression tester, surface friction and geometric roughness with the KES surface tester and the thermal sensation with the KES Thermo Labo instrumentation. Translational models, developed form the KES measurements with sensory ratings, were able to predict subjects response in varying degrees. The compressional energy, surface geometric roughness and thermal quality were found to be the most important objective measurement predictors.
