Abstract
Para-linked aromatic polyamide having cyano substituent group, poly(4,4'-diamino-2'-cyanobenzanilide-terephthalamide) was synthesized by solution polymerization of 4,4'-diamino-2'-cyano-benzanilide with terephthaloyl chloride in a polar organic solvent, which formed lyotropic liquid crystal in polar organic solvent such as dimethylacetamide(DMAc) and N-methyl pyrrolidone(NMP) containing inorganic salt such as LiCl and CaCl Its polymerization behavior as a function of polymerization time, concentration of monomer and LiCl as well as its optical anisotropy and critical concentration forming anisotropic solution as a function of LiCl concentration and inherent viscosity were investigated. A novel optically anisotropic aramid dope was prepared by the addition of equimolar amount of to the thick gel-like solid obtained during polymerization; the sudden change in bulk viscosity of the dope as a function of polymer concentration was observed and it, therefore, indicates characteristics of typical an-isotropic solution.
