Abstract

A miniature meltblowing spin-die was designed, based on the Exxon's patent. Through this equipment, the processing factors, such as air velocity, air temperature, spin die temperature, throughput rate, and die-to-collector distance(DCD), were changed to investigate their effects on the physical properties of polypropylene fiberweb. The effect of the peroxide, which affect the melt viscosity of polypropylene, was also studied. The experimental results showed that fiber diameter could be reduced by increasing air velocity, and spin-die temperature. The air temperature and the DCD also affected the fiber diameter, however, these effects were not as great as the above processing factors. The amount of peroxide, added on the polypropylene resin, greatly affected the melting behavior of the polypropylene resin. But its influence on the fineness of meltblown fiber was not significant. At certain driving conditions, the average fiber diameter of 2 μm could be attained through this equipment which was one third of the air velocity used in commercial production.
