Shrinkproof Finish of Viscose Rayon Fabrics with Cellulose Reactant Resins

Abstract

Shrinkproof finish of 100% viscose rayon fabrics using resins which are widely used in durable press finish for cotton, such as dimethyloldihydroxyethylene urea (DMDHEU), 1,3-dimethyl-4,5-dihydroxy-2-imidazolidinone (DMDHIN), and one kind of polyurethane resin (UT-l0N) was studied. The effects of resin types, resin concentrations, and curing conditions (curing temperature and curing time) on the fabric shrinkage, tensile strength, stiffness, and fabric density were investigated. DMDHEU and DMDHIN were effective in reducing fabric shrinkage. Tensile strength of the treated fabric decreased and stiffness increased with increasing resin concentration. UT-l0N(polyurethane type resin) was considered to be inappropriate for the shrink proof finish of viscose rayon fabric. Among the three resins used in this study, DMDHEU was the most effective shrink proofing reagent for the viscose rayon fabric considering the cost of the reagent, the result of shrinkage and the tensile strength retention. Curing at 16$0^{\circ}C$ for 3 minutes was the optimum condition for DMDHEU resin with NH Cl catalyst. The shrinkage of the viscose rayon fabric treated with 12.5%(w/v) DMDHEU resin, cured under the above-mentioned curing condition was less than 4%, and the tensile strength retention was more than 70% of the untreated fabric.
