Abstract

The polymerization behavior of vinyl acetate initiated by 2,2'-azobis(2,4-dimethyl valeronitrile)(ADMVN) was compared with that initiated by 2,2'-azobis(isobutyronitrile). A3MW exhibited lower conversion rate and conversion than AIBN, but produced polyvinyl acetate(PVAc) and hence polyvinyl alcohol(PVA) with higher molecular weight. In the case of AIBN initiated polymerization system, the initiator content has little effect on the molecular weight of PVA while the molecular weight of PVA by ADMW was notably decreased with increasing the initiator content. A complete saponification of PVAc polymerized at 30'E by ADMW yielded PVA with number-average degree of polymerization as high as 6,000.
