In order to utilize as biomedical materials for artificial organs antral medical devices, PU-PEO-SO3 was prepared by grafting of sulfonated poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO-SO3) to commercial polyurethane(PU) by bulk modification. Its bulk properties and blood compatibility were investigated and compared with untreated PU and PU-PEO(not sulfonated) . Both PU-PEO and PU-PEO-SO3, showed higher water uptake than untreated PU which is due to the increase in hydrophilicity by grafting of PEO and further ionic sulfonate groups. Modified PUs had similar mechanical properties to untreated PU, indicating trial the chemical modification of PU was accomplished without reducing its bulk properties. PU-PEO-SO3, showed less adhesion and shape change of platelets than untreated PU. In addition, the platelet factor 4 released from platelets was the lowest in PU-PEO-SO3 as compared with other materials. These results suggest that PU-PEO-SO3 is the most blood compatible. Therefore, PU-PEO-SO3 which has superior mechanical property and blood compatibility is Promising as a coating and molding material for biomedical applications.
