Abstract

Polyvinylalcohol(PVA) was obtained by low temperature saponification of polyvinylacetate in methanol by NaOH. PVA fibers were prepared by dry-jet wet spinning of either a solution in ethylene glycol(EC) containing boric acid or a solution in the mixture of dimethylsulfoxide(DMSO) and water. Of the two methods tested, the DMSO process produced fibers with smoother surface and more uniform microstructure than the EG process. Further, the former gave rise to higher degree of crystallinity and accommodated greater draw ratio than the latter However, the spinning method had little effect on the resultant crystalline structure.
