Abstract

To improve the low moisture regain and the static electricity of polyacrylonitrile(PAN) fiber, two types of hydrophilic polymers, polyacrylamide(PAAm) and copolymers of acrylamide (Ahm) /acrylonitrile(AN), were solution blended with PAN in nitric acid, and fibers were prepared from the blend solution. The effects of two types of hydrophilic polymers on the properties of PAN fiber were compared. The moisture regain increased sharply with acrylamide content up to 4% but increased slowly beyond this point. The moisture regain of fiber contained 4% Ahm was about three times that of PAN fiber. The value of PAN/copolymer fiber was higher than that of PANfPAAm fiber at the same AAm content. The static electricity decreased markedly with increasing Ahm content. The value of PAN/copolymer was one-fourth that of PAN fiber. SEM micrographs for fibers showed stripped fibrillar morphologies, and the structure exhibited distintly with increasing draw ratio and Ahm content.
