Abstract

A hand operative three-dimensional weaving machine was built to study the effect of the geometry of the preform on the mechanical properties of the 3-D woven fabric composite material. Based on the geometrical model of three-dimensional woven fabric, weaving parameters including overall dimensions, yarn run-in, reed density and take-up rate are determined from a yarn spacing and the member of yarns interlaced in X-, Y-, and Z-directions. Fiber volume fraction of warp, filing and Z-yarns are obtained as a function of linear density of the reinforced fiber, yarn spacing, and contraction of each yarn. The maximum fiber volume fraction was calculated to be 68.0 f for balanced 3-D woven fabric when yarns assuming circular cross-sections.
