Abstract

A new initiating system, comprises of 2,5-dimethyl-3-hexene in combination with BCl3 has been developed for truly living carbocationic polymerization of isobutylene in methyl chloride at -3$0^{\circ}C$. The living nature of the polymerization was demonstrated by incremental monomer addition technique. The number average molecular weight of the resulting polyisobutylene is dependent on the mole ratio of initial monomer and initiator concentration and has a very narrow distribution. Conversion and initiator efficiencies are always 100%. The mechanism of polymerization was also postulated.
