Abstract

Polyester polyurethanes based on the 4,4'-diphenylmethane diisocyanate(MDI), N-methyl diethan olamine(MDEA), and Songstar were synthesized with varying levels of hard segment content. The tertiary amine of MDEA was sulfonated with γ-propane sultone converting the polyester polyurethane to a polymeric zwitterion and then formed PUI-Cu(II) complexes. Polyurethanes, which contain basic nitrogen in the hard segment and exhibit plasticity and lack of strength, can be converted into high tensile strength elastomers upon quaternization. This phenomenon can be explained by the increase of the hard segment polarity, the formation of hydrogen bonding, the increase of the melting point and therefore, the formation of hard segment domains. The morphology of PUI-CuxS and PUI-Cu(II) complex for decomposition of hydrogen peroxide was increased with a raise of reaction time.
