Abstract

Several ordered aliphatic-aromatic polyamides such as poly(4,4' terephthanilidesuccinamide) (PTSu), poly(4,4' terephthanilideadipamide) (PTAd), poly(4,4'-terephthanilidesuberamide) (PTSb), poly(4,4'-terephthanilidesebacamide) (PTSe), and poly(4,4'-terephthanilidedecanefdicarboxamide) (PTDe) were prepared by low temperature solution polycondensation of 4,4'-diaminoterephthanilide (DAT) with diacid chlorides. Optimum polymerization conditions giveing higher molecular weight poly(4,4'-terephthanilidealkylamide)s (PTAA's) were investigated in terms of solution system. solid content, and acid acceptero type. None of the PTAA's examind exhibited transition temperatures but they decomposed above 390℃ via two steps. PTAA including longer methylene block gave rise to more serious thermal degradation. X-ray diffraction intensities of PTAA's showed main peak at 2θ=23.0° and shoulder peak at 2θ=20.5°. PTAA containing shorter methylene block exhibited better stability to sulfuric acid.
