Scavenger Treatment for Reducing Formaldehyde Content in Resin-finished Fabrics
수지가공 면직물의 포름알데히드 함량 감소를 위한 포착제 처리
Abstract
The object of this study was to investigate new formaldehyde scavengers and to determine the feasibility of these scavengers in a finishing bath containing DMDHEU as a reactant. Nitrohydroxy compounds such as NMP, NMPD and TRIS NITRO, and aminohydroxy compounds such as AMP, AEPD and TRIS AMINO, were studied using such parameters as curing time, curing temperature, catalyst type, pH of the treating bath and the concentration of scavengers. NMP and NMPD decreased the formaldehyde level to 700ppm, but they were not effective as formaldehyde scavengers compared with the other classical scavengers such as urea and ethyleneurea. TRIS NITRO, AMP, AEPD and TRIS AMINO had adverse effects on formaldehyde release and were determined to be unsatisfactory scavengers. A low formaldehyde level of about 200ppm was obtained by treatment with ethyleneurea at 2.0% concentration in the finishing bath. Moreover, when used at 5% concentration, formaldehyde released from the cured fabric was reduced to less than 50 ppm. Ethyleneurea proved to be the most effective scavenger.
