Effect of Structure on the Cocrystallization in the Blends of Poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam)-Poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam-co-hexamethylenediammonium adipate) and Poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam)-Poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam-co-p-xylylenediammonium adipate)

Abstract

Cocrystallization behavior was studied for two blend systems : poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam) and poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam-co-hexamethylenediammonium adipate) ; poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam) and poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam-co-p-xylylenediammonium adipate). The blend was found to be miscible when hexamethylenediammonium adipate content was less than 8mol% or p-xylylenediammonium adipate less than 4mol% in copolyamide in the case of as-cast samples. However, after melt crystallization the blends became miscible or partially miscible in almost all the cases examined. Cocrystallization can take place in the blend of poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam) and poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam-co-hexamethylenediammonium adipate) because of the similarity in the chemical structure between hexamethylenediammonium adipate and caprolactam unit but for the blend of poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam) and poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam-co-p-xylylenediammonium adipate). the copolyamide can crystallize neither separately nor with poly($\varepsilon$-caprolactam) owing to the dissimilarity in chemical structure between p-xylylenediammonium adipate and caprolactam unit.
