Abstract

Due to the long history and large numbers of computers in the USA, their use has expanded past the business applications phase, and past the scientific and engineering applications phase as well so that at present, new and esoteric uses are constantly being discovered and explored. This paper summarizes the computer research being done at MIT's Project MAC laboratory, which is a fairly representative cross section of computer research throughout the United States. This research is about computers themselves rather than about some other field in which they are being applied. It is supported principally by the Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA) of the Defense Department.
