Abstract

In order to modify the moisture regain and dyeability of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) film, N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone was graft polymerized onto the film using ceric salt as an initiator. Various pretreatments of the film were tried in order to increase its reactivity and it was found that treatment with benzyl alcohol (15$0^{\circ}C$, 2 hrs.) was effective. The grafting medium consisted on N-vinyl-2-pyrrolidone, acetic acid, water and ceric salt. The pretreated film was allowed to react in the medium under nitrogen atmosphere and with constant stirring. Influence of conditions upon the grafting was investigated and some properties of grafted film were measured. The grafted samples showed improved dyeability toward Acid Scarlet dye and increased moisture regain.
