Abstract

The thermal shrinkages of poly(ethylene terephthalate) filament yarns which were manufactured at various draw ratios and drawing temperatures were measured by using Fiber Shrinkage Tester from the room temperature to the melting points. The effects of draw ratios and drawing temperatures on the thermal shrinkage-temperature curves were studied on the basis of experimental results. In the case of draw ratio 3.0 and above it, the thermal shrinkage increases with increasing temperature and draw ratio, therefore the maximum thermal shrinkage was observed near the melting point. The thermal shrinkage also increases with drawing temperature but in the case of drawing temperature above 100$^{\circ}C$, the thermal shrinkage decreases with increasing drawing temperature. In the case of draw ratio 2.5 and below it, the thermal shrinkage increases rapidly at the beginning of experiment and decreases with increasing temperature, therefore the maximum thermal shrinkage appeared in the vicinity of the glass transition temperature.
