Abstract

m-and p-(N-carbazyl) methylstyrene were synthesized by reaction of m-and p-chlorome-thyl styrene with potassium carbazole. Picryl and 2,4-dinitrophenyl methacrylate were synthesized by reaction of methacryloyl chloride with corresponding phenols. Homopolymers and copolymers were prepared with AIBN (Azobisisobutyronitrile) as an initiator in benzene at 60$^{\circ}C$. N-carbazyl methylstyrene and 2,4-dinitrophenyl methacrylate were homopolymerized via radical mechanism, while picryl methacrylate was not. Picryl methacrylate was readily copolymerized with N-carbazyl methylstyrene via the formation of charge-transfer complex of the monomers. The picryl methacrylate unit in copolymer increased with the total monomer concentration.
