Abstract
The hydroxyl groups of cellulose were substituted to nitrite groups by treating dinitrogen tetroxide in N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) medium. Cellulose sulfacte was obtained as sodium salt by reacting DMF-sulfur trioxide complex with cellulose nitrite, neutralizing with sodium carbonate, and precipitating with methanol. The degrees of substitution of sulfate groups were increased as the amount of sulfur trioxide increased, but had some limitation. The sodium salt of cellulose sulfate was reacted with ethylenediamine and the resulting product was identified by IR spectral analysis. In the presence of acid catalyst, they were reacted by formation of a salt between the negative sulfate groups and the basic NH2 groups of the ethylenediamine.
