Abstract

The effects of knitting speed on the characteristics of plain knit fabrics were investigated by measuring tightness factor, fabric density, and strenght retention after knitting on the basis of various knitting speeds using wool yarns(anti-shrink finished and unfinished raw yarns) and nylon textured yarn as knitting yarns. The results were as follows; 1) Tightness factor of plain knit fabrics were correlated to knitting speeds. With this result, coarser gauge knit fabrics can be conversed to finer fabric through the speed-uping of knitting. 2) Also the density of knit fabrics were correlated to the knitting speed. On the basis of Poisson's ratio, wale to course density, optimum knitting speeds of wool yarns and nylon textured yarn were about 100 rpm, and 160 rpm respectively. 3) Strength retention of knit fabrics after knitting were not related to knitting speeds, but slight high tendency were seen to the wale direction of non-anti-shrink finished wool yarn-knit fabrics.
