A Study of the clo values of thermal comfort clothing at different activity levels under the various environmental conditions

The objects of this study are to find out both the condition of clothing (clo values) which one can adopt oneself to thermal environment and ranges of environment which one can maintain one's thermal comfort according to the condition of clothing. The method of the study is the computer simulation which was carried out by the comfort equation formed by Fanger of environmental engineer. The condition of the simulation set a range from -15℃ to 35℃ in air temperature, from 50kcal/hr-m² in metabolic rate, and from 0.1m/s to 3.0m/s, but the relative humidity is keep constant, at 60%. The results of the study are as follows: 1. Both indoors and outdoors, the more metabolic rate and relative air velocity increase, the lower heat resistance of clothing needed to maintain one's thermal comfort become. 2. When the clo value of clothing is constant, in outdoors, the range of air temperature which one can maintain one's thermal comfort is wider than in indoors, for the former is influenced by mean radient temperature. 3. When the heat resistance of clothing is required over 5 clo to maintain our thermal comfort, in indoors, we have to control the condition of environment, and in outdoors where we can never control its condition, we have to wear the special clothing, which its clo is over 5clo.
