Abstract

Metacrylic acid has been grafted onto nylon-6 fabric with the use of an ammonium ceric nitrate catalyst. Nylon fabric was treated with an ammonium ceric nitrate in acetic acid solution, filtered to remove excess catalyst solution, then the fabric was grafted in the vapor methacrylic acid. The concentration of ammonium ceric nitrate, concentration of acetic acid in catalyst solution, reaction tempereture and reaction period was proportionally effected on grafting. Some properties of grafted nylon-6 fabric have been studied and the results are: 1. The moisture regain of grafted nylon was increased, but more so with the sodium salt of grafted nylon. 2. The permeability to moisture was increased whereas the air space of the fabric was decreased. 3. The affinity for basic dye was greatly increased. 4. The tensile strength of grafted nylon was decreased to about a half of the original nylon fabric while the crease recovery was not changed.
