Abstract

In this paper, we propose a method for reducing the blocking artifact in high-compressed JPEG images, which is based on minimization of block boundary discontinuity. We analyze the statistical characteristic of dequantized block boundary pixel difference values, classify all blocks in a JPEG-decoded image into one of four classes using that characteristics, and weight the compensating signal of each pixel estimated by the minimum block boundary discontinuity. Four weighting factors are selected based on the image content such as edge/nonedge, each of which is assigned to one of four classes. The proposed method can provide better visual look than any other method referred here by reducing the blocking artifact in the low as well as the high frequency regions.
